Business continuity in tough unprecedented times
The path to here - Gary Vincent, Managing Director, Supercell 365

Being in and around the IT industry for thirty years means you get to see and experience a lot.

Change is what we live for. We sell this, deliver this and consult on its benefits. We help organisations embrace positive change, but what happens in a disaster scenario?

Back in the late 90’s I found myself working for a fast-growing food retailer with distribution centres and a supply chain that included both direct and indirect deliveries. In working with the insurers, the business looked at what the impact on the supply chain would be, if we were to lose the IT function.

Questions were asked, how long could we survive without being paid and paying our suppliers and staff? The statistics we uncovered proved frightening, enough for the business and our investors to embark on an immediate program to build continuity into the services we offered the business.

With everything being on premise at the time the risks were high. We had to consider what was involved when looking at the consequences and impact to the business should the office being completely lost to fire or partially destroyed in anyway. At the time, we worked closely with Hewlett Packard and built services and DR plans to cover all eventualities. I am, however, not sure that back then, if I had come across the concepts of government lockdowns, social distancing or furlough of staff. The thought of a Hewlett Packard lorry turning up in the carpark, plugging into the mains and restoring the latest back up from a DAT tape whilst working through the ordered DR plan was the prospect we had in time of crisis.

Twice a year we tested these plans and found some interesting challenges along the way. Hardware and firmware incompatibility that stopped the restores from happening, from the DAT tapes, meant that we could not use the newly provisioned hardware.

So, what does a service from SuperCell365 look like and what outcomes can we successfully deliver to the SMB community?

The world has moved on as has technology, the internet, cloud services and the like, meaning Business Continuity can take on a new direction, but the challenges can be broadly the same, some, the complete unknown.

Your core business is not IT...

…so Supercell 365 works to understand, identify and map critical business processes, functions, IT systems, resource dependencies and delivery channels whether you are using private cloud, public cloud, hybrid cloud, in-house IT, resilience services providers or a combination.

We analyse the potential cost of disruptions and group them into a “RAG Status” to help define your operational availability and recovery, restoration and resiliency requirements from a business perspective.

Uses plain English to justify your business continuity program

We work in plain English to provide you with a wealth of crucial information, including the essential processes that support your services and offerings – we then work with you to define what needs to happen to help protect you going forward.

How quickly can we get you running efficiently in the right direction. This information, combined with our system of using a “RAG” status to categorise your business processes, provides you the tangible information you need to understand and build a convincing business case for investments in business continuity.
